Extracurricular Involvement
Illini Men's Rowing
~ Rowing gave me a competitive outlet and more cardio than I ever thought I would have! It has been a fantastic experience and something that I will never regret. I was part of our quad that placed 2nd Nationally in the 2022 American Collegiate Rowing Association Regatta (pictured on the right). My rowing endeavor ended has come to an end in my senior year of college where I have decided to devote more time to other interests. ~ This being a club sport at UIUC: I was the Vice President for two years. My tasks included planning trips, designing merchandise, and handling some of our budget. |
Illinois Ski & Snowboard Club
~ I am currently the President of this Registered Student Organization on the UIUC campus. My passion for Skiing and getting others involved in winter sports has lead me to this club. We take a group ski trip out west every winter and spring break. We also host social events and weekend ski trips within the Midwest. I love being able to bring together groups of people that share a common passion, skiing & snowboarding! ~ In addition to being a member, my role is to plan the ski trips, design merch, and find sources of funding. Planning and organizing these ski trips is a big undertaking because we typically bring 75+ people on the big trips out west. |

Personal Identity Reflection
Identity is something that we all have and is unique to every one of us. It defines us, yet at the same time we define it in each and every decision we make. It is something that can change over time as we grow older and gain a broader scope of experiences. The following writing touches on how I have come to define my identity and how it helps me see myself as a leader and growing professional in the field of Civil Engineering.
Growing up has been a very exciting journey for me so far and I anticipate it will continue to be that way because of the adventurous, open-minded life that I lead. In my 19 years on this earth I have lived in 7 houses across 3 states, all of which have had very different people and climates (California, Utah, and Illinois). Being exposed to different areas of the U.S has helped me become compatible and able to establish a common ground with various groups of people. I feel I don't belong to just one group: I’m not just a country-living redneck from Illinois, a ski bum from Utah, or a Movie Producer’s son from California but rather a combination of all those aspects and more. Conversing with people from most any background comes easy to me due to the fact that I have been around a multitude of lifestyles, people, and locations. I feel as though becoming the leader that I am has only been possible because of my diverse range of experiences with people. A leader is someone who the majority of people will feel a like-mindedness with and want to follow. This thought has been realized through my various sporting endeavors, seeing how others are willing to follow me because they feel that they can relate to me even if we may seem different on the surface. Being voted in as the team captain for all of the sports that I have been involved in(Football, Wrestling, Rowing) has been a continued affirmation of my leadership qualities. Realizing my leadership qualities has made me see that I could potentially have success in the world of business leadership and entrepreneurship, a world where communication and trust in a leader are essential to success. Which is why I have put myself on the path of a business minor to accompany my Civil Engineering degree. Because I believe that there will be a time in my life where I would like to have my own engineering firm and will need that business knowledge that I know I’m capable of obtaining.
Beyond leadership I am absolutely motivated to build things owing to the fact that I relish the creative freedom that comes with building something for yourself as well as the happiness I get from building something for someone else. No matter where I’m living I have always been able to be involved in a project. Whether it be house renovations or go kart track design and creation, I am looking to create something new and useful. In particular, I continue to enjoy building larger scale things that can be appreciated more for their functionality and reliability more than anything else. Making things that people get to use and enjoy is one of my greatest passions and a large part of my Identity as an engineer because I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when the work that I put in is validated by the usability of something that I have made. That love and involvement in projects stems from my grandpa who is a retired Civil Engineer and an excellent mentor when it comes to engineering or problem solving. He has been teaching me all throughout my life about how to properly use tools, stabilize structures, wire a house, draft designs, and pretty much anything else I could want to know. Instilling in me a desire to keep building, designing, and imagining new solutions for things that get used everyday. He has helped me find my identity as a future Civil Engineer.
My passion for creating useful things has led me to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign(UIUC) where their engineering programs are some of the best in the nation. I see myself as someone who will strive to be the best at whatever I do. In other words, I want to be known as someone who can be counted on to put out quality work. The innovation community here at Illinois is exactly what I have been looking for to help develop my skills and allow me to become an excellent Civil Engineer. Speaking to the innovation community at UIUC, I have access to top of the line engineering software programs, nationally recognized professors, and a bounty of labs for testing ideas or pursuing personal projects. This type of atmosphere empowers me to become the best that I can be as both a business professional and a Civil Engineer.
At UIUC, not only am I able to explore my passion for engineering but I’m also able to pursue other interests and take classes to help further those interests. One class in particular has been really impactful on my identity as a business professional. That class being the Hoeft technology and management seminar. The class has exposed me to industry professionals and given me more insight into different aspects of business like Human Resources and what employers look for in potential employees. My main reason for taking this class is because I recognize the importance of being multi talented and able to interact in an industry that requires both engineering skill and proficient business knowledge. Classes such as this are also ideal for crafting my identity as an innovator in my field of study. The Hoeft seminar helps reveal what it takes to keep up with constant innovation in our world by connecting us students with professionals who see innovation everyday and find ways to incorporate it into the workplace. Speaking with these professionals has given me the opportunity to learn from the best and take bits of knowledge from them so that I can be my own version of the best in my field
All my excitement and interest in business and innovation comes from before college, where I worked in a variety of environments ranging from a farm to a foundry and wondered at each of my jobs how business decisions were being made and why they were being made. For example, the foundry I worked at made aluminum parts for numerous other companies. What factors were involved in the process of selecting vendors, how do you keep quality high when you’re operating almost non-stop, how does a business executive decide when they need to change up their strategy? In the same foundry I saw innovation in the form of automation, robots were becoming incorporated by performing work that had previously been done by humans. All of these questions and insights are things that interest me and have pushed me towards a business minor and taking business classes that accompany it at UIUC.
In closing, I identify as a creative, innovative, business-minded leader in the field of Civil Engineering. My unique past experiences have shaped me into who I am today and who I will likely continue to be in the future.
